Question; Prepare a persuasive paragraph on the most suitable lighting circuit for a modern public building. ( pose the scenario of being a lighting engineer for the city council)
Phase 1 Use a class discussion to produce a criteria for an effective electrical circuit. Use white board to show the students photos of lighting in public buildings. Using the students own judgements ask them to consider; What sort of lighting they have seen in public buildings? Justify why they were or were not effective? Do families need the same sort of lighting in their homes that you would find in public buildings? Justify? Should usage of energy be considered when designing a home or office? A there ways of creating light without the use of expensive electricity. Teacher information The most efficient circuits are designed to ensure that the cable travels the shortest possible distance. Draw the estimated path of the circuit on a scale plan of the house ensuring the cable it a straight as possible so save on running costs. The groups will come together after their discussion and decide on the most valuable aspects of a circuit to comprise their criteria which is then written on the board.(rubric could be copied and handed out to assist the class) Criteria for lighting circuit in a public building 1. Effective for the activity that is undertaken there. 2. Economical - public funding considerations 3. Ecological - using less energy means conserving natural resources 4. Designed to allow natural light to enhance the electrical lighting. Phase 3 Students need to prepare their recommendation for lighting a public building by addressing the criteria they created. They also need to justify why they have chosen the aspects. After hearing their peers arguments for electrical circuits they will judge their peers and rank them (keeping a note in their science book of the best presentation, not all the presentations) as to who had created the circuit that most suited to the criteria. The educator will lead the discussion and ask if this system would also be the best circuit for a house? Inform the students that next week in science they will design and construct a lighting system to suit the diorama of home that the year 5's have created. Teacher information For early finishers this game is great for embedding the correct knowledge of electrical circuits. It could also be a revision tool for the whole class to do before a lesson. http://www.andythelwell.com/blobz/ This simulation task could be used for early finishers or revision.
